The Edinburgh Fringe is upon us and to get prepared for another Scottish summer Read About Stuff is running a ‘Five From The Fringe’ interview series, where creative teams answer five questions about their upcoming Festival shows.

In this interview, I chat to Justin Elizabeth Sayre about Justin Elizabeth Sayre is a 40-Year-Old Woman.

Can you tell me a little about your show and what audiences can expect?

This show is comedy about loving your prime and finding yourself in the right place, the right time and right version of you. It’s a show about growth, self-acceptance, and Elizabeth Taylor. Taking lessons from fabulous ladies, the show takes us all on a journey of discovering what it means to be a fabulous 40-Year-Old woman all our own. It’s more than a number or a phase, it’s a state of mind.

What drew you to this specific story, and why does it belong at the Edinburgh Fringe?

Well, I identify as a 40 Year Old Woman, spiritually that is, and I wanted to write a show about stepping into your prime, feeling confident in your own skin and accepting all the glory, gory details of your life. I think the show’s been an important one for me to write, because it’s solidified my own ideas around what I want from my life and I hope to share that with people. Where better than the fringe?

What has been the biggest challenge in bringing this production to life?

Costumes. How do you cover all this beauty?

How does the design of your show (set, sound, or lighting) impact the presentation of your story?

I’m going to look so fabulous, everything else around me will pale in comparison.

If you could sum up the show in one word or phrase, what would it be and why?

In a world that tells you you’re not enough, it’s time to be a little too much.
