The Edinburgh Fringe is almost upon us and to get prepared for another Scottish summer Read About Stuff is running a ‘Five From The Fringe’ interview series, where creative teams answer five questions about their upcoming Festival shows.
In this interview, I chat to Devon Loves Me! about Time Travel Postman.
Can you tell me a little about your show and what audiences can expect?
It’s an interactive clown show about a time traveling postman. My personal goal is to deliver at least one piece of mail to every single audience member. Expect to play some games with me to help progress the story. Or if you’re uncomfortable with audience participation (at first) then expect to watch other people play games with me (as you slowly get more and more comfortable and interested in playing).
What drew you to this specific story, and why does it belong at the Edinburgh Fringe?
I wanted to make a show inspired by my friends from my time traveling and living abroad. I also wanted to feel very vulnerable on stage and play a lot of games. The Time Travel Postman somehow became the logical conclusion to this desire. The Fringe is a place where audiences go to see scrappy shows that have a lot of heart and strange ideas, and I think this show is exactly that.
What has been the biggest challenge in bringing this production to life?
We use a mailbox as our set, and for a while our audiences thought it was a trash can. One time someone left their trash in it at the end of the night.
How does the design of your show (set, sound, or lighting) impact the presentation of your story?
Melissa and I co-created the show, and she runs all of the tech. She and I are constantly playing games with each other throughout the whole show — especially when it comes to the sound effects. We’ve been saying for a long time now that it’s basically a 2 person show disguised as a solo show because the sound effects are so much a part of the performance.
If you could sum up the show in one word or phrase, what would it be and why?
Friends! You could think of this show as “take your friend to work day” for the postman, and the audience is his huge new group of friends!
